HEGE PORTRAITS ON SALE TO HELP FALLEN OFFICERS

Two young artists will get a chance to show their talents at the 19th annual Barbecue Festival today and also help raise money for a charitable organization that benefits law enforcement officers and their families.

Richie Mosely, 33, of Greensboro and Dennis Lanier, 31, of Lexington will be selling their original artwork of Sheriff Gerald K. Hege and his Spider car, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the nonprofit Blue Line Foundation.. The foundation, which is run by Hege's wife, geri, assists families of officers injured or killed in the line of duty nationwide.

The festival opens at 9 a.m. today in downtown Lexington.

The art will be limited editions signed by the artists and by the sheriff. Both artists said they're hoping the exposure will lead to other projects for them.

Mosley, who is self-taught as an artist, said he started drawing at about age 3 in his native Bedford, Va., where he won many awards for his art while in high school. He is employed in Greensboro as a draftsman.

Mosley, a member of the Greensboro Artists' League, said Hege commissioned him to do the Blue Line project when he met him at a show where Mosley was exhibiting some NASCAR drawings. About 800 copies of his original pen-and-ink drawings have been printed for festival sales.

Lanier, who works as a computer artist at Wayne Trademark Printing & Packaging in High Point, has a degree in commercial graphics from Randolph Community College. He has been in the graphics field since 1991 and also has been involved in freelance work and trying to break into the NASCAR portrait and events market.

The Hege print is Lanier's first published work. There are 800 prints and 25 artist's proofs.
