Giclée (zhee-clay)
A giclée is a new innovative digital printing process considered to be one of the world's best techniques for reproducing original works of art. This process allows the prints to be reproduced on the same watercolor paper (usually 100% rag or canvas) as what most artist use to create their works on giving the reproduction the look and feel of an original painting.
Artist Proof
When printing a limited edition, the artist is present to "press check" the quality of the image at the beginning of the press run. Once approved, the artist "signs off" on the run and the first few prints off the press (usually 10% or less of the total run) may be set aside, numbered separately and marked as Artist Proofs ("A/P"). Although basically identical to the rest of the edition, artist proofs are sought by collectors and considered more valuable because of their limited number.
Lithograph
Offset lithography is the process of reproducing images from ink coated plates using 4 Color Process Inks (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black).
Limited Edition
A reproduction of an original painting, that is strictly limited to a certain number of images. They are usually printed on high quality, acid free cover-weight paper and each is hand signed and numbered by the artist. When sold out, limited editions are never reproduced in the same format, and therefore appreciate in value.
What is S/N?
S/N stands for signed and numbered. An example of this would be 130/500. The first number is the number of the item and the second is the size of the edition. The lower the size of the edition, the more collectable your piece will be. Some limited editions come with a number-matching certificate of authenticity
Certificate of Authenticity
A certificate that is issued with some limited edition sets. Certificates usually have a number corresponding to the print and a brief description of the painting from the artist viewpoint. When buying or selling on the art market, it is imperative that the certificate accompanies the print. This ensures its value.
Remarque
A remarque is a limited edition print with a small hand-drawn or painted detail done by the artist on the margin of the print. Each remarque is one of a kind and adds to the value and collectability.
Poster
An open edition reproduction, usually printed on lighter weight paper. Although posters may be collected and are suitable for framing, they have little "investment" value
